Marsh Street Arches and Gardens
Marsh Street Garden
Marsh Street Arches and Gardens CIC, based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, negotiated a community asset transfer for a piece of derelict land from Barrow Borough Council. They have since transformed the land into a well designed, user friendly, green open space.
Marsh Street CIC has recently obtained an additional community asset transfer from Barrow Borough Council, to incorporate an adjacent piece of land. The CIC plans to develop the land to include a community ‘grow your own’ scheme.

In addition, the CIC is working with Barrow Borough Council and Network Rail, as part of the Advancing Assets for Communities Programme, to negotiate the transfer of a derelict property bordering the garden and of several adjacent vacant railway arches. The transfer, and subsequent demolition of one property will allow better access to the garden for the whole community, and that of the arches will enable the organisation to develop youth, community and other much needed services, as well as providing a route between the two gardens.
